Friday Video: Blau and Esslin on Waiting for Godot

San Quentin Drama Workshop co-founder Rick Cluchey in Krapp's Last Tape.

Martin Esslin’s seminal 1961 book The Theatre of the Absurd opened with a description of Waiting for Godot as performed for inmates at San Quentin State Prison in a 1957 production directed by Herbert Blau. In 1987, three decades later, Esslin and Blau reminisced about the play and this particular production at a Paris seminar. A clip from that discussion is below. (And here is a 2008 memoir of that original production by Alan Mandell, who later appeared as Lucky and went on to found the legendary San Quentin Drama Workshop with Rick Cluchey — who appears briefly at the end of the video — which arose directly out of the 1957 staging.)
