Martin Esslin’s seminal 1961 book The Theatre of the Absurd opened with a description of Waiting for Godot as performed for inmates at San Quentin State Prison in a 1957 production directed by Herbert Blau. In 1987, three decades later, Esslin and Blau reminisced about the play and this particular production at a Paris seminar. A clip from that discussion is below.
