A few weeks after Mother’s Day, but better late than never, the Performance Project at University Settlement presents You My Mother: The Chamber Opera Project, the first fruits of a project long in the making from The Theatre of a Two-Headed Calf. The project teams three playwrights with three composers to develop small operas . Two-Headed Calf says:
Please join us for this first showing of the Two-headed Calf’s largest collaboration to date, featuring 3 of today’s most exciting women playwrights — Lisa D’Amour, Karinne Keithley Syers and Kristen Kosmas — who have teamed up with 3 of today’s most innovative composers – Chaya Czernowin, Brendan Connelly and Rick Burkhardt. They have come together under the Two-headed banner, to create a chamber opera triptych that investigates the collaborators’ personal narratives about their ever-shifting, complex adult relationships with their mothers.
These readings — Yarn/Wire + Strings will perform the music, and the performances themselves will be directed by Brooke O’Harra — are in preparation for a full production of the triptych scheduled to run at La MaMa ETC early next year as part of the celebration of La MaMa’s 50th anniversary. You My Mother will be presented 19-21 May 2011 at University Settlement, 184 Eldridge Street (corner of Rivington), on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Tickets are $15.00 and are available here.
